Sam's Cataracts

Since my last post, we have been to the doctor to have Alex's stitches removed, since he decided he didn't want children, and to have Sam eyes checked because he had an infection. The pollen is really tough on all of us. While we were at the doctor's office Sam found out that he has tiny cataracts in both eyes. My heart is broken. Does anyone have any suggestions of what steps we need to take from here?

Alex's Busy Schedule

Baby Alex has been so very busy this week. He had an appointment with his groomer, Miss Debbie, yesterday for a cut and to remove the dreaded mats. Today he had to visit Dr. Amanda for the neutering. My sweet baby has been through such a hard week. I am so hopeful that he does well. Sam was so worried about him yesterday and then to take him away again today was awful.

Falling leaves with Sam and Alex

My sweet babies, Sam and Alex, love to play outside and I let them run around the fenced yard and play as much as possible when I am off. Alex chases Sam and Sam chases Alex. This past weekend we spent a good bit of time in the yard raking and mowing because the leaves are falling so heavily now. I try to clean them up often so I don' t lose my dogs in all the leaves. I joked to some friends that the leaves in my yard were so heavy that when I saw a couple of moving ball of leaves coming toward… Continue

November 13

Sam and I have finally adjusted to having Alex in the house. For nine years it was only Sam and myself. I kept thinking about getting Sam a little brother but just never did. When Alex came from Oklahoma to live with us I thought I had made the biggest mistake -- that was in August of 09. It is now November and the adjustment period is almost complete. Sam loves Alex just like I do and I can't tell you how much I enjoy being mommy to the both of them. Sam has been rejuvenated and loves to run… Continue

Sam absolutely did not accept Alex. He still doesn't really care too much for him although he does occasionally allow Alex to to lie near him. So I think he is softening a bit. Sam was never a big eater--he only nibbled throughout the day. But now that Alex is living with us Sam eats his food and won't allow Alex to eat until he is finished. Alex on the other hand has accepted his role and truly loves Sam. Alex follows Sam everywhere he goes. When I go out and return I try to make sure that Sam gets first attention and then Alex. There are times when I get the opportunity that I just pick up Alex and love on him. Sam is usually perfectly happy to lie on the couch next to me and allow me to throw a toy for Alex to chase--something I do often. I wondered if I had made a mistake when I first got Alex, but I think Alex brings us both joy with his playful antics and I wouldn't have it any other way now. It is a little more effort on my part, but I think it is worth it. When Sam's time comes I will get another companion for Alex right away and not wait.

Hi Betty, Very happy to hear that Sam & Alex are getting along. I tried to introduce a new brother to Oliver three months after we lost our beloved Rio. However, Oliver would have nothing to do with the new addition (another maltese). Oliver actually broke out in hives, and would quiver at the sight of "Melvin". I ended up returning Melvin. After I did this Oliver's hives disappeared and he was very happy. The vet & groomer and I decided it was best to focus my attention on Oliver. He is relishing every minute of it. I take him to work with me and he just loves hanging out with Mom. Did Alex & Sam connect right away? Or did you have some problems? Looking forward to your insight and response.

P.S You should join the Maltese group on this site. I'm sure you will enjoy this site. I agree with you....I don't consider Oliver a maltese....I call him the little man !
