Hi Ruth--
I am featuring the group "Rescue Dogs" which you created on our home page. Will you go in and edit the group so it has a photo and flesh it out. I know a lot of our members have rescue dogs and this is going to be a great group discussion.
Thanks for your passion in this subject.
Aloha

That's not a "running hound", but a "Running Walker Hound", a specific breed. The Walker family of Kentucky raised hounds back in the 1800s that have influenced quite a few related breeds, including the Treeing Walker Coonhounds, the Running Walker Hounds, and the Walker Foxhounds.

I do hound rescue, so am involved in saving quite a few each year, including a number of Walkers. Unfortunately, in parts of the country where Walkers are commonly used for hunting there are many that die in shelters each year, either because they got too old to hunt or weren't that good to begin with, and were dumped. Too few want them as pets.

One of the hounds in our group's foster care is a Running Walker Hound named "Gator", who came in with two siblings as a puppy and is still in rescue 4 years later. All three were badly abused, and it's difficult to find homes for dogs that are so frightened of people that they cower at the back of their runs. Gator is my buddy, though, and I hope to try him at our house soon. He just has to accept my wife and 4 cats, and our alpha bitch has to accept him. The cats will be easy; the rest ... we'll see. I'd post a picture if I could figure out how this site works.

You asked about the dog in my pictures. Yes, she was a harlequin. She died in December, one week short of her 11th birthday. She was a rescue who came to us just short of her 1st birthday, after a very abusive first home. She was KasinoDane Skip-A-Heartbeat CGC CD, but known to everyone as "Toots".

We still have two Danes: Sister Sheva Susannah Wesley, CGC CDX L1MCL (a rescue), and TriStar Heavenly Heidi, CGC CD (not a rescue).

I hope to soon be giving a Running Walker Hound a try.

I've been lucky enough to know many rescue dogs, both to live with me and to work with me as therapy dogs. I was amazed how many rescue dogs come through training as therapy dogs. They seem to respond so well to the elderly and sick. And they KNOW they're appreciated and loved. They can be a bit needy but I've had purebreds who were needy. For myself I've always had a mix of mutts, rescue animals, and purebreds. I have a problem anytime I really connect with an animal, they seem to say "take me home" and it just happens. I always consider the animals already at home first but if it seems a good fit...they're mine.

Hi Ruth! We have 2 rescues and 2 dogs from breeders. One was supposed to be a foster, but we are foster failures......this girl just fit in so well with our 2 male dogs. Then there was a scared little golden boy that needed a home and we took him. The 2 rescues were from established rescue organizations. We love each individual, but have to be done. While feeding, loving and excercising isn't a problem.....vetting gets very expensive. And we have one cat that is very tolerant!

Your home sounds like mine! We have 1 dog, 4 cats, and 5 horses. The more the merrier, I guess! There is nothing better than a good cuddle with my animals at the end of a long day.
